Knowing the audience is overwhelmingly male, late 20’s to tipping onto proudly middle-aged, we’ll skip the filming locations of Love Actually and Bridget Jones’s Diary, the Globe Borough Market, for the latter if one must know.
Instead, we dive straight into boozers that featured in adrenaline-packed, masculine flicks. The sort of films that leave you pumped up, slightly suspicious of everyone around you, and half-ready for a scrap. A few entries dip into TV territory — but their prominence and/or strange locations make them impossible to ignore.
Snatch – Ye Olde Mitre (Hatton Garden)
Ye Olde Mitre sits just off Hatton Garden, London’s diamond district, and is about as historic as boozers get.
Both the interior and exterior featured in Snatch, serving as the backdrop for a Doug the Head deal. Crucially, it hasn’t changed much since those days, still tight, history dripping from the walls, and still unmistakably proper.
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells – Jolly Gardeners (Lambeth)
Another Guy Ritchie classic found its way into a Lambeth alehouse. The Jolly Gardeners hosted the Vinnie Jones nursing a dreadful looking pint of Guinness in the famous “Desert Eagle” scene.
In the late ’90s, when it was shot, this place was very proper. Sadly, the tides of gentrification have lapped hard round these parts. Today, the former saloon is an upmarket gastropub.
That’s London, I suppose. At least it’s not a bloke of flats I suppose!
Legend – Turner’s Old Star (Wapping)
A backstreet Wapping gem, Turner’s Old Star retains an unmistakable 60’s charm making it the perfect setting for Legend, Tom Hardy’s big-screen take on the Kray twins.
The boozer was the scene for an epic bar brawl between the twins and the rival Richardson gang and remains largely untouched since filming, needless to say, still carries its proper stamp with ease.
It also features as August in the Proper Boozers of 2026 calendar, which will indeed tell you everything you need to know.
