Proper Boozers is the product of a lifelong love affair with pubs — not just for the beer, but for the stories, the characters, and the communities they hold together.
I’m Niall, and I grew up above South and East London pubs. My parents, Irish immigrants, ran boozers for decades. Some of my earliest memories are from the pub — one of them being a West Indian gentleman and pointing at toddler-me and shouting:
On the day I was born, my dad left a bottle of rum on the bar for the regulars to help themselves. This fella clearly made the most of it!
As a kid, I’d sneak downstairs late at night to see the place transformed — smoke curling in the air, laughter in the corners, music playing, and stories being shared. It felt secret. Special. Like stepping into a world just beyond bedtime.
Pubs, for me, were never just about pints — they were about people, the stories.
In 2020, I started the @Proper_Boozers Instagram account to celebrate the character, charm, and heritage of proper pubs — the kind that don’t make the guidebooks. It now has over 46,000 followers and continues to grow.
Today, Proper Boozers is more than just a page — it’s a growing community, a pub history resource, and home to our guided walking tours, events, and soon, merchandise. Whether you’re a local, a visitor, or just a lover of pub culture, you’re all welcome here.
